A Website Grows Up (A 5-Part Vignette)

compliments of the collective consciousness

story #1:
last weekend my phone was stolen. picked from the back pocket of my favorite jeans. i had no idea.

the end.

story #2:
fast forward two gloriously quiet days: i replace my phone, and life returns to its chatty normalcy. nyc calligraphy is about to turn two years old, and what better way to commemorate the occasion, i think aloud to myself while waiting for the L, than by tracing back -- so to speak -- to the first discernible moment i publicly debuted any calligraphic lettering whatsoever. (please see previous post: nyc calligraphy is born.) this was a wedding gift for some friends, given to them to be given -- on behalf of them -- continuously to the public.

the end.

story #3:
hmm, i think, regarding the previous post and its corresponding image: it's not that legible, is it? (my, the things one learns in two years.) i decide upon an additional post with an additional photo -- the same stenciled sentiment, but its second public appearance and one for which i have a much clearer, documented image.

but wait. [insert impending sense of doom here.] the additional image, i realize aloud to myself while walking up 3rd avenue, IS ON MY STOLEN PHONE.

to be continued...

story #4:
i am sad: not only is my phone lost and the graffiti tag long gone (having since been painted over several times), an additional loss has occurred. gone, too, is any documentation -- all proof of its mere existence. a lesson in impermanence, i say inaudibly to myself, and glare at an innocent fruit vendor.

story #5:
unless! i shout from an imaginary east village rooftop, unless it found its way to the collective consciousness by some other means! perhaps someone ELSE was moved by its presence and included it on their OWN blog! a long shot, but hey. i do a quick google image search and...

feel suddenly grateful for my stolen phone.

happy birthday, nyc calligraphy. here's to the bigger picture.
